Few artists today may lay claim to the fact that they were raised as performers from the age of 5 but our own Chris Cummings is no ordinary country artist. From that first performance at the Austin McGinnis Annual Corn Boil he's been knocking crowds off their feet everywhere, including Nashville, where Chris is currently back in the studio working on his latest project with the same fantastic visionaries that produced his previous releases. A body of work that would be impressive for an artist many years older and a second career as a successful songwriter will guarantee that this young man will play an ongoing role in the evolution of Canadian country music artists on the world stage. That his songwriting efforts have been rewarded by the recording of the title track "Twentieth Century" by supergroup Alabama is just icing on the cake, adding a sense of added security for the future and a feeling of satisfaction for Chris and his "Twentieth" co-writer, the legendary Don Schlitz.

Many have heard the story of how Chris was in math class when his life changing call came from Warner Bros. Records in Nashville. That it came to such a relatively young man may be surprising to some but for a performer who had worked his whole life at his craft, getting his first paying gig at 12, it was perfect timing. A life filled with talent contest wins, telethon and charity appearances and perfecting his vocal technique as to timing and delivery had prepared this artist for that next step. The success in late 1995 and 1996 of the hits, "The Kind of Heart That Breaks" and "Sure Enough" from the album "Somewhere Inside" established Chris as Canada's latest contribution to the country music stars down south and was another example of the incredible artist resources that have been breaking out for the past few years.

The latest offering, "Lonesomeville", released in January 2000 by Warner Records and co-produced by Warner/Reprise Nashville President Jim Ed Norman and Rick Scott has been met with much anticipation to see how the group has evolved this time around. If the earliest reviews are any indication then they have another winner on their hands with the first single "That'll Teach Her" rising to the top of the Canadian country charts even before the snow had melted. With 9 of the 11 songs being written or co-written by Chris he feels that "Lonesomeville" is his best work to date and when asked about his reaction to it's release says he's "...really excited about it". With background vocals contributed by Ricky Skaggs and Mac MacAnally (Chris's first Nashville co-writer) and songs written with legends like Don Schlitz and Gary Burr you can count on this album launching hit after hit the way the previous album did. Chris has said that the songs on this album were chosen more for their compatibility to his vocals than any other consideration and it's been reported that his favourite song is "A Little At A Time". And that's how radio will dish it out, so just go out and get it! You won't be sorry.

Man can not live on work alone, no matter how talented you are, as Chris discovered when he took Stacy Harvick as his wife in August 1999. The new Mrs. Cummings has helped to bring closer Chris's long term goal of having a happy family life with kids definitely down the road. That her sister Carrie is Mrs. Daryle Singletary means there's no shortage of creativity around the family get-togethers, with Chris and Daryle already teaming up to co-write some songs for upcoming projects. The wedding featured a tribute to his wife, written and performed by Chris that would bring a tear to your eye if you heard it (I've heard it once, believe me, I know) and with a happy home life and a very promising career things are looking pretty good for the next century for this young couple. We wish them both all the best.
