Paul
Brandt
For a man
who has yet to reach his 30th birthday Paul Brandt is quickly
becoming one of country music’s most celebrated artists.
The professional accomplishments of this mild mannered, Calgary born
musician have helped propel him to the top of the country music scene in Canada
without a doubt but it’s his compassion and typical Canadian candor that have
made him one of the world’s most admired entertainers.
Never afraid to jump to the aid of a good cause or help spread the word
of a situation that needs addressing, Paul proves that there’s still a lot of
the health care worker inside under the black hat and award winning vocals.
From his earliest days performing in contests and showcases while he worked at his other calling, learning what he needed at Mount Royal College to earn his registered nursing degree, Paul developed that ability to listen and convey to others how he felt which has proven to his advantage. The songwriter who used to sit on his porch making up songs about his dog-when he didn’t have a dog- found the perfect way to express himself and country music is better for it. With his recent work with the World Vision organization Paul has demonstrated that while fame and success are good things we must not forget those who need our help, our understanding and our compassion. Even he admitted that he’d not realized how touched he would be by what he’d see when the organization made their visit last year to the countries that are a world away from the Alberta where Paul grew up. We all couldn’t (or wouldn’t) want to take a trip like that but Paul did, being one of the few music industry professionals to sing his hit songs to groups of children who probably had never heard “Yeah” on the radio at home.
I had an
opportunity in spring of 1999 to meet Paul in Hamilton at one of his many
“Meet the Fans” visits, this one at the Hamilton Centre Mall.
Paul played for the crowd for over an hour before retiring to the mall
police station to have a break before signing autographs for his fans.
A happy series of coincidences led our little group to be ushered into
the station first to wait while the Hamilton Wentworth Regional Police escorted
Paul from the stage to the station. As
the doors were slid open and Paul entered-alone- the first impression that you
get of him is “he’s so tall” which is quickly followed by “he’s so
young”. A truly remarkable
gentleman who took the time to meet everyone present, shake hands and have a
word, his largest smiles were reserved for my nieces who met him last.
As he bent down to crouch to their level he asked their names, gave them
his autograph and enclosed them in his arms for a picture they’ll treasure
forever. Getting the fans before
they’re seven, now that’s a skill.
