Canadian singer Michelle Wright was known for her rich, powerful voice and her R&B-tinged country songs. She was born in Morpeth, Ontario, where her father performed in a country band and her mother sang with the Reflections for over a decade. Heavily influenced by Motown, Wright began singing as a child and joined her first band while she was attending college. She spent the next three years performing in a variety of bands and then founded her own group, which toured North America for five more years. In 1988, she released her debut album Do Right By Me in Canada and the next year won a contract with Arista Records in Nashville. In 1990, she released the single "A New Kind of Love," which cracked the Top 40, and in 1992 she had her first Top Ten success in the U.S. with "Take It Like a Man," which also provided her with her first number one on the Canadian charts.
