Known as “Canada’s sweetheart”, Shirley Myers
brings a warmth and distinctiveness to her own blend of traditional and new
country recordings. With a smile
that can literally light up a room, powerful vocals and a high energy
performance to match, this lady is a force to be reckoned with in Canadian
music.
With her sunny smile, perpetually up-beat
personality and amazing presence on stage, Shirley appears to be Canada’s
answer to legendary personalities Dolly Parton and Barbara Mandrell all rolled
into one! She constantly has a
smile on her face. For example, during Canadian Country Music Week 2001 Shirley
and I both appeared on the local breakfast show.
She had flown in, arriving in the middle of the night for a 7am show,
only to find that her luggage had not arrived.
Even then she was as cheery and personable as could be, both on and off
the camera! That's an amazing
feat!!
In her distinctive traditional stylings, one can
hear the remnants of a previous generation of country artists.
Learning at the feet of her father (popular country entertainer Gene
Myers) has definitely left an impression on this young woman.
Her traditional spin on contemporary music is distinctive and genuine.
Growing up around music, it is perhaps not surprising that Shirley has
mastered so many instruments. Not
only does she sing and write or co-write most of her material, she also plays
the guitar, drums, banjo, keyboard, bass, lap steel, and saxophone.
One of the most entertaining parts of her show is when she makes the
rounds of all of the instruments, showing her adeptness at each.
Although
Shirley now makes her home in Nashville, her roots are in Moncton, New
Brunswick. Shirley’s big Canadian
break came with her win in the Canadian Country Music Association’s 1988
Talent Search (currently enjoying a resurgence as the Project Discovery
Contest). This honor was supported
with extensive Canadian touring and eventually led to the move to Nashville.
Shirley broke into Canadian radio in a big way with her first release
“Let It Rain” in 1997. The
title track was one of the most played singles on Canadian radio in 1997 and led
to a Juno nomination in the category of Country Female Vocalist of the Year.
“Let it Rain” was followed with the release of “There Will Come a
Day” in 1999. This second album
also produced a number of Canadian chart hits with its more edgy sound, inspired
in part by her new producer Keith Olson (known for his work with artist like
Fleetwood Mac and the Grateful Dead!!) Shirley
has finished work on her third commercial release entitled “A Little Time for
Me”. The first single is at radio
with the album set for release this fall. From
what I’ve heard so far, Shirley has once again outdone herself, providing
Canadians with a range of up-tempo rockers and traditional ballads.
At this year’s Canadian Country Music Awards Shirley was also nominated
for Independent Female Vocalist of the Year.
Congratulations!!
Being part of a great team is one of the keys to
success in the music business. Shirley
credits her manager (and executive producer) Peter Legett with providing the
backbone of her administrative and business operation.
This partnership was formed as Legett (also a New Brunswick native) was
launching a Nashville based management company.
The two joined forces and have found great success together.
Working off of each other’s energy has allowed each to perform at their
personal best and has created a dynamic and long lasting collaboration.
With the new CD, a new website, constant live
performances and all of the behind the scenes work that goes into creating a
successful music career, you can bet that Shirley (and company) are never at a
standstill!! Shirley sums it up
best herself, "Since
I was 3 years old, the only thing I ever wanted to do was entertain. So here I
am, still entertaining. And it's still fun!"
